It is fairly common for people to be unaware of how to properly maintain and clean their dishwasher. The resourceful cleaning tabs you purchase at the store do not ask whether or not you have also cleaned your dishwasher filter and seal.

But, do not fret, we have you covered.

The dishwasher seal (also known as the door seal or dishwasher gasket) is a flexible rubber or silicone strip that creates a watertight barrier between the dishwasher’s door and its tub, preventing hot, soapy water from leaking.

The common issues and signs of failure are:

  • leaks around the door
  • visible damage to the seal such as cracks, tears, or gaps
  • hardening or crumbling of the gasket

After each use, wipe the seal with a damp cloth to remove any food particles and/or detergent residue. And once a week, leave the dishwasher door slightly open after a cycle to let the interior dry; which prevents mold and odors.

Each month you should:

  • Use an all-purpose cleaner or a 50/50 water and vinegar solution in a spray bottle to clean the racks and dishwasher interior. Alternatively, you can run a hot water cycle with a dishwasher cleaning tablet.
  • Tackle stains by using a baking soda and water paste and gently scrubbing with a small brush or toothbrush to remove buildup.
  • Clean your filter.

Now, if you need to replace the door gasket, don’t worry it’s super simple:

  1. Remove the old seal by gently pulling the seal out of the container. You will do this until the entire seal comes out.
  2. Remove the new seal from the packaging. Gently stretch out the new gasket and find the center of the gasket.
  3. You will line up the center of the seal with the center of the dishwasher—sometimes there is an actual line already marked by the manufacturer on the seal.
  4. Press the seal into the channel until it is completely filled. It is okay if the gasket is a tad longer and folds towards the front of the dishwasher; this is normal.
  5. Inspect your work and push the seal to make sure it is completely in place.
  6. Close the dishwasher door and keep it closed for one to two hours so pressure is applied to the seal.

Maintaining your seal will ensure a longer lifespan for your dishwasher—which will surely save you money in the end.
